Electric Vehicles in Québec: A Recovery in an Adjusting Market

In the second quarter of 2026, zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) accounted for 17.8% of new vehicle registrations in Québec, compared with 15.6% a year earlier.
Québec recorded 23,701 new ZEV registrations, an increase of 12.5% year over year, while total new vehicle registrations declined by 1.3%. ZEVs are therefore gaining ground both in absolute numbers and market share.
Québec Stands Out in Canada
With a market share of 17.8%, Québec remains above the Canadian average (10.7%) and Ontario (8.2%). However, British Columbia recorded a slightly higher share at 18.7%.
Open chart ↗How Should We Interpret the Decline Since 2024?
After reaching a peak of nearly 40% in late 2024, Québec’s ZEV market share declined sharply.
However, this decline needs to be considered in context. According to Statistics Canada, some Québec consumers brought forward their vehicle purchases ahead of reductions in provincial rebates in January 2025.
Part of the 2024 peak may therefore reflect purchases made earlier than originally planned, rather than a sustainable level of demand.

The data indicate that Québec’s ZEV market is growing year over year, despite an uneven trajectory since its 2024 peak.
The decline from that peak is not sufficient evidence of a lasting loss of interest in electric vehicles.
More data will be needed to determine whether the market is entering a stabilization phase.
